What Is Labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty is a procedure that reshapes the labia minora, or “inner lips” of the vulva. Everyone’s anatomy is unique but ideally, the labia minora does not extend beyond the outer, labia majora. Many individuals have large or hypertrophic labia minora due to genetics or that have stretched or loosened due to childbirth or aging. There are also options to reduce the volume of the labia majora if they are too large or add fat if they have lost volume. Your surgeon will discuss your specific concerns and develop a customized plan to help you achieve your goals.

Expert Labia Reduction Surgery

Boost your self-confidence with discrete labiaplasty, a vaginal rejuvenation procedure from Quintessa.

Patients often desire a labiaplasty for a number of reasons. Whether is purely aesthetic or function concerns like pinching and twisting, a labiaplasty can alleviate these issues and have you feeling more confident.

Even though “normal” labia come in a variety of sizes and shapes, you may feel your labia is too long or asymmetrical. Oftentimes, women may also feel pain or discomfort if the labia skin interferes with intercourse or become pinched or twisted doing everyday activities like wearing underwear, exercising, or even sitting

Our goal is to listen to your concerns and provide the best treatment plan available, beginning with a discrete consultation, where we can also discuss options like ThermiVa vaginal rejuvenation for those interested in non-surgical feminine wellness solutions.

Best Candidates for Labiaplasty

Ideal labiaplasty candidates are healthy women who are no longer planning on having children and desire genital rejuvenation.

Our Three-step Process

1. Preparing for
Your Labiaplasty Surgery

You should stop any medication or supplements that are not essential for 10-14 days prior to your labiaplasty to decrease your risk of bleeding complications. Please refer to your list of medications to avoid and always check with your doctor prior to stopping medications.

2. What to Expect During Labiaplasty Surgery

Labiaplasty reduces the labia minora, causing them to no longer hang below the labia majora. This procedure can be completed to reduce asymmetry – when one labium is longer than the other, or to shorten both labia so that they do not twist, tug, or become exposed. The technique can be performed under local anesthesia and involves excising the redundant skin. These incisions are hidden and only absorbable sutures are used.

Our very own Dr. Daniel Butz or Dr. Jacob Thayer will provide expert advice and consultation so you can decide if this procedure is right for you before committing.

3. Labiaplasty Recovery & Postoperative Planning

The recovery process following a labiaplasty depends on the individual. However, most patients take a week off of work to fully recover. Some swelling and pain is expected and best relieved with an ice pack and rest. You should avoid rigorous exercise for at least 2 weeks and avoid lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk. Most people are able to resume all normal activities after four to six weeks. Be sure to speak with our staff about any recovery questions you may have.

The procedure can be performed in the office under local sedation or in an accredited outpatient surgery center with the assistance of an anesthesiologist.

Location: Outpatient.
Recovery Time: 2-3 weeks

Why Do Women Choose Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgeries?

Labiaplasty procedures are chosen for a number of aesthetic or function reasons. Often it’s a combination of issues and a labiaplasty can be a solution for pain caused by the twisting and tugging of the labia. When the labia minora is large, it can cause this type of discomfort and pain during certain activities like riding a bike or during intercourse.

However, some women select this procedure to simply resolve general itching and irritation or to improve the overall appearance of the vaginal area as well.

Labiaplasty Surgery FAQs:

Am I a Suitable Candidate for Labiaplasty?

If you’re experiencing discomfort due to elongated or asymmetrical labia—whether it’s irritation during daily activities, discomfort during intercourse, or concerns about appearance—you might be a good candidate for labiaplasty. Ideal candidates should be in top health and have realistic expectations about the results.

What Does the Labiaplasty Procedure Involve?

Labiaplasty involves altering the labia minora to address both practical and aesthetic concerns. The treatment normally takes 1 to 2 hours and can be done under local anesthetic. Excess tissue is removed to ensure that the inner labia do not extend beyond the outer labia, with the goal of reducing discomfort and achieving a symmetrical appearance.

What Is the Typical Recovery Process After Labiaplasty?

Recovery times vary, but typically patients take roughly a week off work. Some swelling and soreness are expected and can be treated with ice packs and rest. To ensure appropriate recovery, our doctors recommend you avoid energetic exercise for at least two weeks and refrain from sexual activity for six weeks.

Are There Potential Risks or Complications Associated With Labiaplasty?

While labiaplasty is generally safe, potential risks include bleeding, infection, asymmetry, or changes in sensation. Choosing an experienced surgeon, like Dr. Daniel Butz at Quintessa, minimizes these risks.

Will Labiaplasty Affect My Sexual Sensation or Function?

Labiaplasty aims to preserve or enhance sexual function. When addressing discomfort during intercourse, many patients find an improvement in their sexual experience post-procedure.

How Should I Prepare for Labiaplasty?

Preparation involves stopping non-essential medications or supplements 10 to 14 days before surgery to reduce bleeding risks. Always consult with your doctor before making any changes to your medication regimen.
